8 tips to make your new house feel like a home

Moving into a new home is an exciting experience, however, after all the anticipation it can sometimes be difficult to make it feel like a home. We've got 8 tips to help make your new house feel like a home, quickly.

Unpack one thing at a time

Unpacking slowly will pay off, keeping your focus on one room at a time helps you keep track of what you have and gives you a great sense of progress. Have some of your favourite things packed separately in a box and label it so that you can unpack it first. Make your bedroom a priority so that you can collapse in bed in an organised and calm setting to recharge for the next day. From here, move onto your living space and kitchen which is where a lot of the household commotion lies.

Lay your art

Before you start putting holes in the walls we recommend laying your art and photo frames up against the walls to get a good feel for where everything will sit. This will give you time to work out exactly where you want them and to ensure you’re confident they’re in the right place.

Hang curtains

Hang some curtains to soften your home whilst helping to provide some privacy and make the room feel dressed. Curtain colours that are bold make the room pop, but for something more subtle go with a colour that’s a few shades from your wall colour.

Add your favourite scent

Burning your favourite candle or infuser as a familiar scent in a new space will go a long way to making you feel at home.

Have fun with the walls

Paint some walls to inject colour and your personality into the space, which will create the atmosphere you want to feel at home. Alternatively, you can achieve this with artwork or styling pieces - either new or brought over from your old home.

‘Unpack’ some routines from your old home

Create that spot where you drop your keys, kick off your shoes and unwind; keeping this in a similar location to the old house helps you feel familiar.

Fill your house with friends

Unpacking is a monotonous chore and many hands make light work, so accept help from friends during your move. Filling your house with loved ones brings noise and laughter to feel just like home. When the day is done, test out the kitchen and make a home-cooked meal to share.

Plan a housewarming party

This is a great way to have a deadline for everything to be done so it doesn’t drag on for weeks. It will fast-track getting unpacked and organised and ensure you have the house looking the way you like it when you know people are coming over.
